A theatre named after a Futurist pioneer
The Luigi Russolo Municipal Theatre is named after one of Portogruaro’s most distinguished citizens. Born in the town in 1885, Luigi Russolo was a painter, musician, and one of the leading figures of Futurism. In 1913, he published the celebrated manifesto The Art of Noises, in which he explored a new form of music based on noise rather than traditional harmony, anticipating electronic and experimental music by several decades. It is no coincidence that the Casa Russolo Gallery and numerous cultural events in Portogruaro are also dedicated to him.
From a former cinema to today’s theatre
The building was created through the transformation of the former Silvio Pellico cinema, acquired by the Municipality in 2004 and completely renovated. The new theatre in Portogruaro was inaugurated in May 2009 and can seat up to 628 people. It also preserves a poetic detail: the Della Magnolia foyer, named after the centuries-old magnolia tree that was retained during the renovation works. The theatre is managed by the Santa Cecilia Music Foundation, whose aim is to make the Russolo a theatre for everyone, open to the public and local associations.
The theatre season: drama, dance, musicals and family shows
Each year, the theatre presents a season organised by the Municipality of Portogruaro in collaboration with Arteven, the Veneto regional theatre circuit. The programme is deliberately varied: drama, dance, musicals, comic opera, and stand-up comedy feature in the evening programme, alongside a rich calendar of performances for children and young people. The figures confirm the vitality of this theatre season in Eastern Veneto: the latest edition, the sixteenth, welcomed more than 10,600 spectators, an increase on the previous year, with ten evening productions and fifteen events for younger audiences. The programme changes from season to season and is usually presented at the beginning of autumn.
