There is one institution that more than any other reflects the musical soul of the town: the Santa Cecilia Music Foundation in Portogruaro. For nearly two centuries, it has trained musicians, organised concerts, and brought great music to the historic buildings of the town centre, making Portogruaro a key reference point for classical music in Eastern Veneto.
From 1838 to today: nearly two centuries of history
The Foundation’s roots date back to 1838, when the local Philharmonic Institute was founded. The present organisation later developed from this institution. Over time, its activities have expanded into three main areas: education, production, and management. This long and continuous journey has made Portogruaro a small “city of music”, attracting students, teachers, and music enthusiasts from across Italy and abroad every year.
The music school in the heart of the town
At the heart of its activities is the Portogruaro Music School, housed in a historic building in the town centre that was renovated between 2007 and 2009. It is a modern venue with around twenty classrooms, most of them equipped with a piano, as well as a valuable library collection featuring handwritten scores. Its educational programme is open to all ages, from young children to adults, with courses ranging from preparation for Conservatoire examinations to amateur instrumental and vocal practice.
The school has agreements with several Conservatoires, including those in Venice, Udine, Trieste, and Adria. Alongside music education, it also offers a Theatre School for children and young people, summer masterclasses, and advanced training courses.
This focus on younger generations has always been one of the Foundation’s distinctive features.
Concerts and Festival: the music that brings Portogruaro to life
Alongside its educational activities, the Foundation also presents an extensive concert programme. Its productions include the International Music Festival, the town’s long-standing summer music event, complemented by chamber music series throughout the year. Concerts are often held in some of Portogruaro’s most evocative settings — churches, courtyards, and historic buildings — transforming them into distinctive concert venues. The Foundation is also responsible for the technical management of the Luigi Russolo Municipal Theatre: in Portogruaro, music and theatre are part of one shared cultural journey.
