Foliage in Eastern Veneto: where to admire autumn colours

When the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, the landscape changes: woods and vineyards light up in shades of yellow, orange, and red. It is foliage season, and Eastern Veneto — with Portogruaro as a convenient base — offers some of the most evocative places to admire autumn colours, from the plains to the great beech forests of the mountains.

Foliage in Cansiglio: the beech forest turning gold

Just over an hour’s drive from Portogruaro lies one of Veneto’s most popular foliage destinations: the Cansiglio plateau. Its forest extends across more than 7,000 hectares of beech and Norway spruce, between the provinces of Belluno, Treviso, and Pordenone. In autumn, it offers a striking contrast of colours, with the green of the conifers set against the red and golden tones of the beech trees.

The best time to visit is generally around mid-October. From Pian del Cansiglio and Pian Osteria, several walking trails suitable for different levels lead into the forest, including a classic circular route that is perfect for a walk surrounded by autumn colours. At sunrise and sunset during this season, it is also possible to hear the roar of red deer, the deep call of males during the rutting season. An experience that makes the trip even more memorable.

Near Portogruaro: Alvisopoli Wood

You do not need to travel far to enjoy autumn in Veneto. Just a few minutes from the town, in the municipality of Fossalta di Portogruaro, lies Alvisopoli Wood, an evocative lowland woodland that was once part of the park surrounding the 18th-century Villa Mocenigo. Today, it is a protected natural area — a Natura 2000 site and WWF Oasis — with a network of paths winding through canals, small hills, and a central pond.

It is the ideal place for a leisurely walk among elms, maples, hornbeams, and English oaks, whose leaves take on warm autumn colours. You may also spot some of the wildlife that inhabits this corner of Eastern Veneto. A peaceful destination, also suitable for families, and easily reached from the Portogruaro motorway exit.

Here’s the revised version:

Along the Lemene River and through the vineyards

Even without leaving the town, autumn can offer plenty of surprises. The banks of the Lemene River and the Giralemene cycle route provide golden views that are perfect for a bike ride or a walk. Just a few kilometres away, the vineyards of Lison-Pramaggiore take on the warm tones of the post-harvest season. It is the ideal time to combine autumn colours with a visit to a local winery, enjoying tastings and seasonal flavours.

The Friuli lowlands: plains, rivers, and vineyards

Heading east, beyond the regional border, you will find the Friuli lowlands: open countryside crossed by rivers and canals, dotted with vineyards and long tree-lined avenues. At this time of year, the banks of the Tagliamento River and the country roads winding through the vineyards offer peaceful, light-filled landscapes, ideal for a leisurely drive or bike ride while discovering local villages and traditions.

When to go and how to plan your trip

The best time to enjoy foliage is generally from late September to early November, with the peak usually falling in October. Colours depend on seasonal weather conditions, so it is always advisable to check the current situation before setting off. Thanks to its strategic location near the A4 motorway and excellent transport links, Portogruaro is an ideal starting point. From the town, you can easily reach both the lowland woods and the beech forests of Cansiglio on a day trip, before returning to the comfort of the historic centre.

Between a walk in the woods, a bike ride along the river, and a glass of local wine, autumn in Eastern Veneto becomes a season to enjoy to the fullest.
